How do you make cookies all the same size?

Whether or not your cookies are perfectly round won’t matter if they are all different sizes, which also means they’ll bake unevenly. That’s why the first step is to portion the cookie dough into evenly sized mounds. For that, I use a cookie (aka ice cream) scoop. I own them in three sizes: #60 for small cookies, #30 for medium cookies, #10 for large cookies. Each holds one tablespoon, two tablespoons, and almost half a cup of cookie dough, respectively. If you only get one, I recommend a #30 scoop since it’s a standard size most cookie recipes call for. 

To portion the cookie dough, scrape up enough of it to fill the scoop and make sure to pack the dough in tightly to avoid air pockets and to get a rounded top and flat bottom. Scrape any excess dough against the edge of the bowl. Squeeze the handle and release the round, portioned cookie dough on a baking sheet. That’s it!

I’m gonna be honest: This is one of those baking tips that is mostly more about aesthetics than anything else.

Before you think I’ve lost it, I’ll be the first to admit that it really doesn’t matter what your cookies look like, so long as they taste good. Imperfections? Bring ‘em on.

But there are times when I would like my baked goods to look nice, especially if I’m packaging them up as a gift. If I’m gonna make a batch of my favorite chocolate chip cookies for one of Elle’s teachers or for a neighbor who just had a baby, I will put in the effort to make them look as pretty as they taste.

What size scoop is 2 tablespoons?

Cookie scoops are among my most recommended baking tools and kitchen gadgets. I have several in different sizes, and they get used quite frequently. They’re by far the simplest, easiest way to get batches of uniform cookies. That size uniformity is what helps cookies bake thoroughly and evenly.

For those of you unfamiliar with cookie scoops, they are spring-loaded scoops that help you scoop and measure batters and dough. They’re usually made of stainless steel with handles of the same material or a nonslip material for a soft grip. The spring mechanism is used to help the dough release easily from the scoop.

You may see them called ice cream scoops. (More on that below.) Just don’t confuse them with the types of ice cream scoops that don’t have a spring-loaded mechanism.

Despite referring to them as cookie scoops, they aren’t just for cookies! You can use them for portioning muffins, cupcakes, and other times you need to portion dough evenly. You can even use them for transferring cake batter to Bundt pans with less mess.

They’re also great for scooping ice cream (of course) and whipped cream. Try using them for making truffles. Don’t forget them for cooking, too. They’re so helpful for making things like meatballs!

What size scoop is 1 tablespoon?

Oddly, I have the smallest scoop and the largest scoop from this same manufacturer and had no issues from them. However, this mid-sized scoop broke scooping keto chocolate chip no-bake cookie dough of all things, and managed to pinch off the skin on the pad of my pinky finger at the same time. I had to throw it in the trash as I couldn't figure out how to reassemble (and I was concerned it would happen again). Now, anytime I scoop with the other sizes, I'm extremely slow and careful - not something you really expect to be just scooping dough and whipped cream.

First off, you need yummy cookie dough so whip up a batch of your favorite. It’s best to use stiff rather than wet dough for cookie cutters as it’s easier to handle and gives the best results. You can use both a stand mixer and a hand mixer to get this done. Once you have your dough made and you have your cookie cutters to hand, it’s time to get stamping!
